An eclectic group of Scholars, Researchers and Masters students from Delhi University visited the Private Collection for a tour and discussion on the Modern Master Amar Nath Sehgal
Contemporary artist GR Iranna visited the museum to understand the sculptor’s work. He brought out a different perspective, from the eyes of an artist, and appreciated Mr. Sehgal’s creative depiction through the bronze medium.
A visit by Director General, Indian Council for Cultural Relations, Mr Dinesh Patnaik along with H.E Jean – Claude Kugener, Ambassador, Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, Embassy in New Delhi, and Mrs Pascale Jean Claude Kugener.
It was a pleasant evening spent revisiting the artist’s life in India and Luxembourg.
The Minister was accompanied by H.E. Amar Nath Sehgal was the first Indian artist to have a solo exhibition in a museum in France in 1965. It was a pleasure to have Ms.Catherine David, Deputy Director of the National Museum of Modern Art at the Centre Georges Pompidou at the museum. We are grateful to the French Institute in India for this visit.
The 12 feet high bronze sculpture traveled from New York to Delhi and was finnaly installed at Society for Development Alternatives premises in New Delhi. The installation of the 730 kilos bronze sculpture was quite a task!!
Master sculptor, Himmat Shah spoke to young art students and writers about his life, his thoughts on art, his creative process and the works of other master sculptors. Students from Jamia Milia Islamia, College of Art and Jawaharlal Nehru University posed questions to the master sculptor in the two hour long intimate discussion.
The Amar Nath Sehgal Private Collection co-hosted a preview evening with the Embassy of Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. The Ambassador of Portugal, H.E Mr. Carlos Periera and Mrs Susana Zarco, Major General Kanwar Vijay Singh Lalhotra, Ms Veronique Dieu were part of the curatorial walk.
The Amar Nath Sehgal Private Collection co-hosted a special preview visit with H.E Jean-Claude Kugener and Mrs Pascale Jean Claude Kugener- Barbier Saint Hilaire.
H.E Jose R Baranano (Ambassador of Spain) and Ms Ana Garcia de Baranano, H.E Nadir Patel (Ambassador of Canada) and Ms. Jennifer Graham, Mr Nagesh Singh (Chief of Protocol, Ministry of External Affairs), Ms Shahana Basu and Aditya Sharma were taken around the museum by the curator.
The Ambassador of the Federative Republic of Brazil, H.E Tovar da Silva Nunes and Ms. Guadalupe Romero Silve spent their last evening in India at the museum with Ambassador of Grandh Duchy of Luxembourg, H.E Jean-Claude Kugener and Ms. Pascale Jean-Claude Kugener.
His Excellency Jean-Claude Kugener, Ambassador, Embassy of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg visited the museum space with his wife, Mrs. Pascale Kugener. Raman Sehgal and Laia Sehgal spoke of the artist’s strong ties with Luxembourg.
The artist’s son and the museum’s Team Coordinator, Rajan Sehgal and Shruthi Issac spent some time at the Department of Art History and Art Appreciation, Jamia Milia Islamia. Prof. Nuzhat Kazmi was kind enough to take them around the space.
Contemporary Indian artist Puneet Kaushik visited the museum and found the drawings to be quite intriguing. He spoke about the significance of drawing in a sculptor’s creative process and that the challenges of form, line and structure are first addressed on paper, then on the medium of bronze.
Prof. Nuzhat Kazmi, professor at the Department of Art History and Art Appreciation, Jamia Milia Islamia visited the museum. She remembered that the artist, Amar Nath Sehgal had his studio at the university premises.
The drawing workshop with the children of was Srijanatmak Manushi Sanstha a revelation. The artworks shall be displayed along with the results of our clay workshop at the end of this year. We totally loved the young artists’ interpretations of the Indian artist, Amar Nath Sehgal.
Art scholar, Ina Ross came to India some years back with her husband and her interest in art management took her to places of art and museums. She is currently studying museums in India. The Amar Nath Sehgal museum hopes to add another perspective to her thesis.
His Excellency Sam Schreiner, his wife Lady Duangduean Vacher and Ms. Laure Huberty, Deputy Head of Mission, Embassy of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg spent come quality time at the museum space. The modern sculptor, Amar Nath Sehgal spent nearly three decades in Luxembourg. He was awarded the honorary citizen award by the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. His first solo exhibition in Luxembourg was at Musée d’histoire et d’art in 1966.
First Secretary M. Alain Baetens, Embassy of The Kingdom of Belgium spoke extensively on the Indo-Belgian connection and the cultural history of Belgium. The museum provided another strong link to the Indo-Belgian cultural bond. The artist had solo exhibitions at significant public and private institutions like the Cultural Centrum (Ghent) and the Flemish Akademi of Art (Antwerp).
Madhu Jain, Editor of Indian Quarterly spoke on the role of museums in the country and need for interactive new museum like spaces. She was accompanied by her husband Mr. Krishna Prasad.
Mr. Jean-Francois Ramon, Director of Alliance Française (India) visited the museum space with Tamanna Kapur, Secretary General of Alliance Francaise (India) to discover that Amar Nath Sehgal was the first Indian artist to have a solo exhibition at Musee d’Art Moderne (Paris) in 1965.
The students from class XI took back some interesting facts on Partition and post independence Indian art. They were introduced to the various aspects of the making of a museum and the centre and inspiration behind our space and concept, the Amar Nath Sehgal Archives. The Team Coordinator, Rajan Sehgal and Curator, Shruthi Issac were present to take the students around for an animated walk around the space.
Mrs. Manjari Nirula (Vice-President, World Craft Council-Asia Pacific Region) invited her close friends for an introduction to the museum collection and her uncle, the Indian modern artist, Amar Nath Sehgal.
Enthusiastic collectors group India Art Fair found the museum to be a very intense experience. We were happy to find their thoughts and emotions regarding the space and the artist in our visitors’ book. Mrs. Shukla Sehgal, Rajan Sehgal, Nandita Sehgal and Shruthi Issac helped cover various aspects on the life and art of the artist.
